Most Popular Types of Pearl Jewelry

Suitable for all types of jewelry, pearls are beautiful and versatile. Below are some of our favorite ways to wear this enchanting and classic gemstone.

Pearl Necklaces

When you think of pearl jewelry, one of the first styles that comes to mind is usually an elegant pearl necklace. A strand of pearls is a staple accessory that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Whether paired with a little black dress or a crisp white blouse, it adds a touch of sophistication to any outfit. It’s one of the reasons we love our Pearl Arc Necklace, a dainty modern take on the classic look. Pearls can also be a striking focal point on a delicate gold chain, such as in our 5 Pearl Necklace. For another way to wear pearls, choose a necklace that incorporates other gemstones or metals for added texture and dimension - there’s really no wrong way to wear them.

Pearl Earrings

Pearl earrings are another versatile and timeless option. From simple stud earrings to more elaborate drop earrings or hoop designs, a pearl earring suits any taste or occasion. For a classic look, opt for white or cream-colored pearls in a round shape. Our Pearl Dot Stud takes the basic single pearl earring up a notch for subtle glamour.

Pearl Rings

Pearls are a relatively soft gemstone, with a rating of 2.5-4.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. While they can be used in rings, they may be more susceptible to damage from everyday wear and tear, so it's important to take extra care when wearing and cleaning them. Pearl rings can come in any style, from classic solitaire designs to more elaborate cocktail rings that incorporate other gemstones or metals. We think pearls look particularly eye-catching when incorporated with black diamonds, as in our Equilibrium Pearl Ring, or white diamonds, as in our Pearl 2 Diamond Ring (featured below).

A Pearl Celebrity: La Peregrina

A pearl the size of a pigeon’s egg! One of the most famous natural pearls is the 50.56-carat La Peregrina. The drop-shaped pearl was discovered in the 1500s in the Gulf of Panama. It became a prized possession of European royalty before eventually being gifted to Elizabeth Taylor in 1969. In 2011, Christie’s New York auctioned the Cartier necklace containing La Peregrina for $11.8 million.

Pearls as June’s Birthstone

The staple birthstone of June, pearls have long been associated with purity, humility, and innocence. In many different cultures, the pearl birthstone was also thought to have beneficial properties such as bestowing long life and prosperity and alleviating medical conditions.

Moonstone (June’s Other Birthstone)

June is one of only two months that has three birthstones associated with it: pearl, alexandrite, and moonstone. Moonstone is known for its shimmery, milky glow. It’s composed of microscopic layers of feldspar that scatter light to cause a billowy effect of adularescence. Moonstone gems come in a range of colors spanning yellow, gray, green, blue, peach, and pink. While less prominent than pearls, it’s a lovely stone that we’ve incorporated into some elegant designs, such as our Moonstone Reese Ring below and the Moonstone Equilibrium Ring pictured in our cover image.
